Parents for Child Care Update
I am excited to share that last Wednesday over 100 parents from across Ontario joined the Parents for Child Care Info Session. I want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who tuned in!
If you weren’t able to join, don’t worry, I get it! Parenthood is busy and unpredictable. That’s why we’re letting you know what we talked about and how to get involved!
What we covered:
- We heard from parents, child care workers, and policy experts about the strengths of our current child care system.
- We learned about the threats we are seeing to replace $10aDay child care with a tax credit model that favours for-profit child care.
- We discussed the language of “choice” and “flexibility.” Speaker after speaker spoke to how this direct-funding-to-parent model has been proven to not create high-quality, affordable, and accessible child care.
Check out a summary of the topics we covered in the video clips linked below:
- Watch Rajean Hoilett (Parent) discuss the importance of protecting and expanding $10aDay child care in our current political context.
- Lisa Pasolli (Researcher, history of child care) discussed the myth that “flexible” funding creates “choice”.
- Watch Carolyn Ferns (Ontario Coalition for Better Child Care) discuss the future of the $10aDay program.
What’s next?
- Send an email to your federal election candidate asking them to protect and expand $10aDay child care.
- Attend our next Parent Organizing Meeting on Wednesday, May 14 @ 8pm.
Even though threats to the $10aDay program are scary, I left last week’s meeting energized. It was so clear to me that parents are ready to defend $10aDay child care.
We are ready to fight for fair wages and better working conditions for child care workers. We are ready to push back against the myths we are hearing. This is because we have seen the benefits of our kids learning and growing in high-quality, public child care centres.
Thanks for being here. We’ll be back in touch soon.
In solidarity,
Christina, Parents for Child Care
